Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri has said that the conduct of elections to be held either now or later, under the incumbent electoral system, will be a joke with the nation. He said that it was the outcome of the present flawed system that the institutions had been pitted against one another. Hundreds of people participated in a rally held under the banner of Pakistan Awami Tehreek Lahore today. The rally was organized to protest against the government’s practice of hiking gas and power prices as well as worst energy shortages in the country. Shaykh-ul-Islam said that he was urging people to rise against electoral system out of his national and religious duty and not at the behest of someone else. He said that the current system had snatched people’s livelihood, their sovereignty, their integrity and paralysed them. He categorically stated that real change was not possible through current electoral system. He said that the system was geared towards protecting the interests of the ruling elite with nothing to offer to the poor masses.
