SC takes up Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri’s petition for hearing on Feb 11

A three-member bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry will take up the petition of Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri for initial hearing on February 11 (Monday). Other members of the bench are Justice Gulzar Ahmad and Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed. In his petition, Dr Qadri has challenged the constitution of the Election Commission of Pakistan on the basis that the Commission was not constituted as per Articles 213 and 218 of the Constitution. He has prayed to the apex court to declare all appointments as void ab initio. The petition has also asked the Supreme Court to pass an order restraining the CEC and members of the Commission from carrying out their functions. read more...

A top-level delegation of Pakistan Muslim League-Q held a meeting with Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri at his residence on Saturday evening and held consultations with him on caretaker setup and dissolution of assemblies. Pakistan’s top court on Friday accepted for hearing a petition seeking immediate reconstitution of the election commission, just weeks before dissolution of assemblies in the run-up to the general elections. ISLAMABAD: Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri filed a petition in the Supreme Court on Thursday for the reconstitution of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). Qadri said that he will contest the petition himself. “I prayed to the court that the composition and constitution of the current Election Commission of Pakistan was unconstitutional. Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri has declared that the struggle he launched on December 23 and January 14 will continue unabated and ‘revolution marches’ will be held across the country. He said that the governments that had been formed for last 65 years manifestly violated Articles 3 and 38 of the Constitution. He said that implementation of both Articles would also be part of agenda in addition to electoral reforms.
